Born in 1990 and based in Ealing, West London, Matt has over 18 years' drumming experience after starting lessons at the age of 7. He first learnt drums at Ealing Junior Music School, before attending DrumTech and studying music at the University of Leeds. He spent a year studying with Ed Soph (Woody Herman, Stan Kenton, Bill Evans and others) at the University of North Texas and graduated from Leeds with a 2.1 BMus degree. Matt was awarded a 1st class award for both solo and ensemble performance, and a special commendation from the Board of Examiners for his contribution to solo performance.
Whilst studying he was in demand as a drummer and percussionist in both Leeds and London, playing in a variety of different scenarios includion big bands, studio recordings, orchestras, theatrical productions, samba groups, small jazz combos, and many more. He has also toured in France, Germany, and Spain with orchestras and big bands, including performances at the Montreux Jazz Festival in 2016, and has performed in many of the UK's most reputable venues including Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club, Pizza Express Jazz Club, The Bull's Head Barnes, Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and Leeds Town Hall. He is currently playing regularly with Chris Read (youtube / soundcloud), along with his soul function group, London Soul Outfit, and jazz combo, Finesse Jazz Quartet. He also teaches privately, and is the percussion teacher at Questors Young Musicians' Club, and St Benedict's School, Ealing.
